A View to Die For

Jake Martin is not your ordinary sleuth. He’s an ordinary guy with an extraordinary dog.
He's trying to make the best of a divorce and mid-life crisis when he gets a call at two o’clock Sunday morning from his mother. His sister has been arrested for the murder of her fourth husband, and his father is near death. Thus begins an adventure that takes Jake and his golden retriever from their Colorado retreat to a backwater town in the Missouri Ozarks where they search for cold-blooded killers, a cache of gold coins buried by Jesse James, and the love of a beautiful nurse.

A Book to Die For

This time the story takes place in the foothills of Denver. Jake is accused of manslaughter and he has to prove the accident was really murder. Along the way he encounters a poaching ring and falls in love with a beautiful game warden.

A Treasure to Die For

There is a treasure high in the Colorado Rockies waiting for someone to find it. Jake Martin couldn't care less. Since the death of his wife, all Jake wants is to be left alone in his mountain cabin where he and his dog, Fred, can get on with life. But when it becomes known that the location of the treasure is encrypted in a message left by a 19th century miner, people begin to die, and Jake’s good friend and neighbor becomes the number one suspect.

The old miner used a copy of Tom Sawyer as a key to his coded message, and the real murderer wants that edition so bad, he’s willing to kill for it. Can the amateur sleuths decode the message and stop the murderer, or have Jake and Fred finally met their match?

Editorial Reviews

A View to Die For
“This is quite simply one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. I absolutely loved it. While I know the Ozarks and Colorado well, it certainly isn’t necessary for the reader to have knowledge of those areas because of the superb dialogue, the plot, and the author’s obvious love for animals. Fred is a wonderful character. And yes, my husband has also given a little beer here and there to our dogs over the years! When you pick this book up, better create a little time to devote to the read, because once you begin it, you won’t want to put it down. Kudos Mr. Houston on writing a great read!” – Dianne Harman, best selling author.

A Book to Die For
“The real pleasure of jumping into this mystery is the manner inwhich Richard Houston writes. Think Garrison Keillor’s `A Prairie HomeCompanion’, a dab of Mark Twain, and a dollop of John Grisham – marinate out in nature, and out comes Houston’s style. Not bad ingredients foran author on the rise.” – Grady Harp, HALL OF FAME TOP 100 REVIEWER

A Treasure to Die For
“The first and second To Die For mysteries featuring Jake and Fred were fresh, filled with surprises and humor, and the third is no exception. Here we have another fine adventure with Jake, an irregularly employed computer programmer and amateur sleuth, and Fred, Jake’s golden retriever and partner in crime-solving. Jake does most of the heavy lifting, with Fred always close by (on just about every page). Their efforts are aided, abetted, and sometimes complicated by a sixty-nine year old grandmotherly figure who likes her Jack Daniels, smokes, and doesn’t know when she’s not fit to drive. These characters–all three–are fun to be with, never tiresome.” -O.Barnack

I loved this series! If you are a Travis McGee fan then you'll truly love Houston's writings! Of course Travis never had a sidekick like Fred!!
Loved the series! Such great, detailed plots and characters. Kept me guessing till the end and the descriptions of Colorado were spot on. Thank you, Mr. Houston! Can't wait for the next adventure!
